More cooking adventures!

There is only so much rain I can take.

Since Santiago has been covered in a layer of fog and wet, icky rain, I have kept my imminent depression at bay by cooking. Typical. I made zucchini bread last night for the first time, and it is yummy yummy I must say. Although next time I think I'm going to try a different recipe just to see which one I like better. I must say, though, I love my "How to Cook Everything" cookbook by Mark Bittman. I'm turning into my mother. I used to laugh at her at how she could be entertained by reading cookbooks. Now I get it! Also, today the fridge was utterly bare so I bought some ingredients for a Spicy Asian Noodle dish. Mmmm was it good. Basically spaghetti noodles soaked in a mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds, some sugar, sliced fresh ginger, garlic, hot sauce and at the end I tossed in some slivered red pepper and scallion. Check out my happy face next to my creation. D was quite pleased too, and he's more likely to diss a dish than to give me his immediate sign of approval. This time though he said, "Amor, tus noodles te quedaron la raja!"
Aw, thanks baby :)

p.s. Should I invest in a pair of rainboots? Can I wear them to work? I feel like not so much....ideas?

Bon apetit! Cooking is soo fun, plus its gratifying to please the boyfriend (and others) from time to time. I cooked pork chops yesterday. Total success with Vuko.

As far as rain boots, you might be able to get away with it being a gringa, but to keep on the safe side you could do what the Chilenas do. They wear like knee-high leather (or synthetic) boots. Those you could wear to work. I actually tried some on yesterday, but I soon left the shop because it became packed with chilenas who were also looking for boots. And I'm probably the pickiest shopper on the face of the planet, so I don't buy much here in Chile. I just occasionally window shop, it's far more satisfying.

Oh, the other thought I had. Vuko works at movistar and he wears boots to work..he has a pair of typical hiking boots like gray colored -- to me they almost look like dark colored tennis shoes, a pair of black Caterpillar boots, and a pair of brown hiking boots (for Minnesota winter). They are all good for keeping his feet dry. But he's also allowed to dress pretty informally. He goes to work in jeans since he doesn't work directly with the customers.

Hey Emma,

I keep coming across blogs like yours and it's great, because I'm a fellow gringa-dating-a-Chileno :) I'm in the States right now, but planning to move back to Chile in a few months to be with my boyfriend (also named Diego), so it's cool to find blogs like yours - makes me feel a little closer to Chile! Anyway, keep up the great blogging!

Heather - pork chops! Sounds yummy, I haven't yet dared to go down the path of some more advanced meat dishes...by the way, I love reading about food on your blog too:)
Jessica - yay! I'm so glad you've come across my blog and those of my friends too! Our group here is growing really really fast and I swear we should all put together some kind of book/manual about relocating for love, young love that is. Definitely let me know when you move back, we need to meet up! Suerte with everything :)

Oh and about the boots. I think I will try to look for something synthetic to get my through the winter, but something lined with furryness so my patitas don't freeze. And good lord I feel you about the boot shopping when the places become packed full with chilenas. yikes!

AHHH!! Those noodles look so good!!!
I have pretty much only made cherry pie, apple pie, and peach pie while I have been here. I want to try other things, but I don´t speak any Spanish and my boyfriend doesn´t like asking for things at the supermarket for me because he "doesn´t know the name" I don´t know the secret to my pie crust, but I can share the recipe with you.

Pie Crust
3 cups flour
1 1/4 cup shortening (I used somethin called Dorina, it worked perfectly!)
1 egg
1 tsp vinegar
1tsp salt
6 Tbsp water
mix flour and shortening
mix all other ingredients in another bowl.
blend together
refrigerate.
this makes a lot of crust but the extra is good if you bake it with cinnamon and sugar on it!!
We should plan a meal together sometime maybe with the other girls too.

Yummy. I support any and all cooking efforts, especially if they happen to coincide with the next gringa get together :) As far as rain boots, I want some too! And yes, I basically think that all boot should be UGGS/slippers on the inside and leather or happily patterned plastic on the outside. I think if you get rain boots with a more sophisticated design you can totally wear them to work.
